5 Days in Portugal: Porto, Douro Valley, Aveiro & Coimbra

Written by Porto locals

Porto, wine country and the Venice of Portugal

Five days is the ideal amount of time to combine Porto with two of the most rewarding day trips in northern Portugal. After three days exploring Porto in depth, you will head into the Douro Valley — one of the world's oldest wine regions and a UNESCO World Heritage landscape — for a full day of terraced vineyards, quinta visits and wine tastings by the river.

The fifth day takes you south to Aveiro, known as the Venice of Portugal for its network of canals navigated by hand-painted moliceiro boats, its Art Nouveau facades, and the striped fishermen's houses of Costa Nova. This guide tells you exactly what to see, where to eat, and what most tourists miss entirely.
